WINS (Warning Information Notification System)

St. Clair County Homeland Security and Emergency Management has officially launched its new notification system called WINS.

“WINS is a countywide alliance of public and private organizations that have a shared need to get information to the public at large,” said Jeff Friedland, executive director of SCCHSEM at a press conference held at the department’s headquarters at St. Clair County International Airport in Kimball Township on Dec. 2. “It’s a communication based system, not a St. Clair County system, not an Emergency Management system. People can sign up for the types of information they want to see.”

The main public safety component of WINS is that it will allow St. Clair County authorities to notify residents, businesses and other organizations directly in the event of severe thunder storms, tornadoes, evacuations, shelter-in-place orders and other emergencies affecting life and safety.

“The reason severe thunder storms are included is that the last three tornadoes we’ve had were determined to be tornadoes after the fact,” said Friedland.

Residents, businesses and other groups can sign up for messages and alerts by visiting bereadystclaircounty.org and clicking on the WINS logo. The system allows users to select the originator of the information – picking one or more county department, township, city or school district, and then selecting specific kinds of alerts, such as water alerts, police or fire. Weather alerts include 32 different kinds of updates. Residents may also enter their pertinent health issues that may become significant during emergencies.  Click the link below to sign up.
